The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council for the Arab States (GCC), Jassim Al Budewi, on Monday, May 20, 2024, informed the United Nations of the council's "firm position on supporting legitimacy in Yemen and ending the Yemeni crisis through a political solution to the crisis under the three references."

The three references, according to Al Budewi, are: "The Gulf Initiative and its implementation mechanism, the outcomes of the Comprehensive National Dialogue Conference, and UN Security Council Resolution 2216."

This came during Al Budewi's meeting at the GCC Secretariat General in the Saudi capital Riyadh with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, according to the official Yemeni news agency Saba.

Al Budewi reiterated, according to the agency, "the support of the GCC countries for all UN efforts that contribute to achieving security, stability, development and peace in Yemen, which will benefit and improve the welfare of the Yemeni people."

Al Budewi drew attention to what was stated in "the statement of the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council for the Arab States at its 44th session in December 2023 in Doha, which included full support for the Presidential Leadership Council headed by His Excellency President Dr. Rashad al-Alim, and the entities supporting it to achieve security and stability in Yemen."

The meeting of the UN envoy with the GCC Secretary-General comes within the framework of the efforts of his office to push the Yemeni parties to reach an agreement to end the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, as described by the United Nations, which was produced by the war.

On December 23, 2023, the United Nations announced that the Yemeni parties had reached an understanding to commit to a set of measures that include implementing a ceasefire throughout Yemen, measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, and engaging in preparations to resume a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.

The roadmap and peace efforts in Yemen have stalled due to attacks by the Houthi group, classified by the world as a terrorist organization, against commercial cargo ships in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden, since last November.
