Human Rights Commission Team Visits Marib, Meets with Authorities and Detainees

The deputy governor of Marib Governorate meets with members of the National Committee to investigate allegations of human rights violations

A team from the National Commission to Investigate Allegations of Human Rights Violations visited Marib Governorate on June 3, 2024, holding discussions with local authorities and visiting detention facilities.

The visit began with a meeting between Marib Deputy Governor Dr. Abdulrabbu Muftah and the commission team, which included Judge Dr. Diaa Muharez, Judge Dr. Mohammed Tallian, Judge Hizam Al-Marisi, and Judge Jihad Abdulrasul. The discussions focused on human rights conditions in the governorate, strategies for strengthening these rights, and collaborative efforts for the future.

The meeting, which also included representatives from the local government, judiciary, and security forces, addressed various human rights issues in Marib. Participants explored mechanisms for safeguarding and promoting human rights, as well as the role of local authorities and security agencies in monitoring violations, preventing their occurrence, and bringing perpetrators to justice.

Deputy Governor Muftah welcomed the commission team and highlighted the efforts of the local government and its security forces in maintaining security and stability, protecting citizens' rights, and upholding fundamental freedoms in Marib. He emphasized the local government's willingness to cooperate with the commission's monitors in the governorate, facilitating their work and overcoming any challenges they might face. Muftah also commended the commission's efforts in monitoring, documenting, and investigating violations, its role in protecting victims, ensuring justice, and holding perpetrators accountable.

Commission members emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between the commission and various state agencies, stressing the need for concerted efforts to reach victims, improve the conditions of detainees, and ensure the enforcement of the rule of law. They expressed appreciation for the cooperation and responsiveness of local, security, and judicial authorities in the governorates they had visited, acknowledging their willingness to consider and implement the commission's recommendations.

Following the meeting, the commission team conducted field visits to the central prison and several other detention centers in Marib, inspecting their facilities and assessing their suitability for detention based on humanitarian standards and national and international laws. The team met with juvenile detainees, inquiring about their legal and welfare conditions and the details of their cases. They also held several listening sessions with victims of human rights violations.

The commission team's visit to Marib was part of a broader field program to visit various governorates, assess human rights conditions, and engage in discussions with relevant authorities.
