Marib, Yemen - A team from the National Commission for Investigating Allegations of Human Rights Violations conducted a visit to Marib's Central Prison, Women's Prison, and Criminal Investigation Department on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, as part of their ongoing field mission to the governorate.
The commission members reviewed the legal status of 542 inmates, including 15 women, currently detained on charges pending before Marib's prosecution offices and courts. Discussions centered around issues under the commission's purview, ensuring adherence to constitutional and legal guarantees for prisoners, as well as international human rights standards.
The team listened to concerns raised by several inmates regarding the need for expedited judicial proceedings, improved prison services, and expanded facilities commensurate with the current inmate population while maintaining their dignity and humanity.
The Marib Police Chief, Brigadier General Yahya Hamid, along with the heads of the Criminal Investigation Department, Women's Prison, and Acting Director of Central Prison, provided detailed briefings on inmate numbers, legal procedures, and services provided to detainees.
Brigadier General Hamid highlighted the local authorities' efforts to finalize the construction of a new Central Prison to accommodate the growing number of inmates currently overcrowding existing facilities.
