Four workers were killed and one injured on Sunday, June 9th, 2024, when a section of the Qubat al-Mahdi mosque in Sana'a's Old City collapsed, according to local sources.
The incident occurred during renovation work on the mosque, which was being carried out by the Houthi authorities, designated as a terrorist group by the international community.
While some sources reported that the workers died due to the collapse of a dilapidated building adjacent to the Qubat al-Mahdi mosque during their renovation work, other sources attributed the deaths to the collapse of a section of the mosque itself.
Images circulating on social media showed citizens and civil defense personnel rescuing victims from under the rubble.
The Houthis have been actively involved in restoring historical buildings dating back to the Imamate period, which the group considers itself a familial and ideological extension of. The Imamate was overthrown by the 26th of September Revolution in 1962, paving the way for the establishment of the Yemeni Republic.
Quba al-Mahdi is one of the historic mosques in Sana'a's Old City, located in the western Sarar district. It was built in 1164 AH (1750-1751 AD) by order of Imam al-Mahdi Abbas bin al-Mansour. Upon his death in 1189 AH, he was buried there, according to Wikipedia.
