The Houthi group, internationally designated as a terrorist organization, claimed on Sunday, June 9th, 2024, that US and British forces carried out airstrikes targeting their positions in Hodeidah Governorate (western Yemen).
According to Houthi media, US and British forces launched three airstrikes targeting the Al-Jabana area west of the Red Sea coastal city, without providing further details.
In the same context, the group's military spokesman, Yahya Saree, stated that they had targeted a British destroyer and two merchant ships in the Red Sea.
Since last November, the Houthi group has been launching missile and drone attacks against commercial cargo ships in the Red Sea, leading to increased maritime insurance costs and prompting many shipping companies to opt for the much longer route around the southern tip of the African continent.
In December 2023, the United States, Israel's main ally, formed a multinational coalition to protect maritime navigation from attacks by the group classified as a terrorist organization. Meanwhile, US forces have been carrying out strikes against Houthi military targets from time to time.
