Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, met with Oman's Undersecretary for Political Affairs, Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali al-Harthy, on Monday, June 10, 2024, to discuss the latest developments in the Yemeni conflict and efforts to find a resolution.
The Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on its official website, confirmed the meeting, stating that the two officials "discussed the latest developments in the Yemeni issue and the efforts being made with the relevant parties to reach a peaceful solution in the interest of the Yemeni people and serving the security and stability of the region."
The meeting comes amidst renewed tensions in Yemen, with the Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, continuing to launch attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. These attacks have hampered efforts to implement a ceasefire agreement reached in December 2023, which included a nationwide truce, measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, and preparations for resuming a comprehensive political process under UN auspices.
The December agreement, while a significant step forward, has been stalled by the Houthis' continued aggression. The recent attacks have raised concerns about the future of the peace process and the potential for further escalation in the conflict.
Grundberg's visit to Muscat, a key player in regional diplomacy, underscores the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Yemeni conflict. Oman has been actively involved in mediating between the warring parties, and its support for the peace process is crucial for any potential breakthrough.
