Abdulmalik al-Houthi, leader of the Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, promised his supporters on Sunday, July 7, 2024, that the formation of a new government is imminent.
In a televised address marking the new Hijri year, al-Houthi stated that "forming the government and embarking on a journey to rectify the judiciary" were among their priorities. He claimed that the process involved "several key tracks" but did not specify a concrete date for the government's announcement.
Al-Houthi asserted that he and his group had reviewed "the structures and systems of the government, its ministries, and institutions." He added, "We identified the flaws, redundancies, and overlaps within them. After the review, we redesigned the structures, objectives, and tasks anew. This process required effort and time."
He further mentioned that they had received "thousands of nominations and proposals" for appointments and positions, which were "subject to scrutiny, study, and examination."
In September 2023, the Houthis announced the dissolution of their internationally unrecognized government as part of what al-Houthi called "fundamental changes."
The group dismissed their own government, headed by Abdul-Aziz bin Habtoor, despite his representing the General People's Congress party, whose leader, Ali Abdullah Saleh, was killed by the Houthis in December 2017.
Although bin Habtoor was removed, the Houthis declared him acting prime minister of the government formed in November 2016 during their partnership with the General People's Congress.
