A Pakistani court on Saturday, July 13, 2024, acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, of charges of illegal marriage.

The Islamabad District Court, in its ruling, stated that the couple should be released if there are no other legal proceedings against them, following their acquittal on the illegal marriage charges, according to Turkey's Anadolu Agency.

Khan had previously faced legal action on charges including revealing state secrets and illegal marriage.

In April, the court suspended the conviction of Khan and Bibi, who had been sentenced to seven years in prison each in early February for illegal marriage.

The previous ruling stemmed from accusations that Khan and Bibi had not adhered to Islamic law regarding the "Iddah" period, a waiting period after a woman's divorce before she can remarry.
