The United Nations has reported that a Yemeni woman dies every two hours during pregnancy or childbirth due to lack of access to reproductive health services.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that "Yemen is experiencing a high rate of preventable maternal deaths."

"One woman dies every two hours during pregnancy or childbirth," the UNFPA added, noting that "around 5.5 million women face limited or no access to reproductive health services."

On July 10, the internationally recognized Yemeni government announced a 70% decline in international funding for the health sector, warning of a potential collapse of the health system in Yemen due to reduced funding.

During a press conference, Yemeni Minister of Public Health and Population, Qasim Buhaibeh, urged regional and international organizations to provide sustainable support to the health sector to ensure the continuation of basic healthcare services and overcome this difficult period.

Minister Buhaibeh explained that the lack of support would result in the closure of between 500 and 700 primary healthcare facilities and 60 secondary care hospitals and centers, leaving approximately 50,000 women without access to reproductive health services. This, in turn, would lead to increased deaths and complications during childbirth.
