President Joe Biden announced on Sunday, July 21, 2024, that he will not seek re-election in the 2024 presidential election. He stated that he will "focus on fulfilling the duties of the presidency for the remainder of my term."
In a statement posted on his X account, Biden said that the decision to not seek re-election came after "assessing the situation with senior officials in my administration."
Biden expressed pride in the accomplishments achieved during the past three and a half years, citing the strength of the American economy, historic investments in rebuilding the nation, improving healthcare, and strengthening democracy.
He stated that his decision was in the best interests of his party and the country, adding that he will address the nation later this week with further details about his decision.
Biden expressed deep gratitude to all those who worked towards his re-election and offered special thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris for her exceptional partnership in their work.
Biden concluded his statement by saying, "There is nothing America cannot do when we work together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America."
