Prominent Yemeni Aviation Engineer Killed in Nepal Plane Crash

A prominent Yemeni aviation engineer, Aref Reza, was among 18 people killed in a plane crash in Nepal on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, according to local and international media reports.

The plane, carrying 19 passengers, crashed shortly after takeoff from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, en route to a domestic tourist destination. Only the pilot survived the crash, according to authorities.

All passengers on board were aviation technicians, including Reza, who had been working in Nepal since 2018. Police officials confirmed the recovery of 18 bodies, including one foreigner, and stated that the bodies are being transported to a morgue. The pilot, who sustained injuries, is receiving medical treatment.

Reza had previously worked for Yemenia Airways and Sa'ida Airways, where he was recognized as a leading engineer. He played a significant role in advancing aviation technology and improving aviation safety standards in Yemen.

Reza was also known for his contributions to training a new generation of engineers in the country, leveraging his extensive experience and expertise in this vital field, according to local media.

The crash has sent shockwaves through the aviation community in Yemen and Nepal, highlighting the risks associated with air travel, particularly in mountainous regions.
