The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has reported that over 400 people were killed or injured due to floods, lightning strikes, and landslides in Yemen during 2023.

The IFRC's latest report on the impact of floods in Yemen states that lightning strikes accompanying heavy rains and flash floods resulted in the deaths and injuries of 413 people during the 2023 rainy season.

The report highlights that the rainy season, which began early in March 2023 and lasted until September, was characterized by various natural disasters, including lightning strikes and landslides. These events, along with floods, led to the deaths of 248 people and injuries to 183 others.

The IFRC emphasizes that Yemen ranks third among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and least prepared to face climate shocks. As a result, natural hazards such as heavy rains and floods have devastating consequences for communities already struggling with the effects of a destructive conflict that has been ongoing for over nine years.
