Several cities in Hadhramaut governorate, eastern Yemen, witnessed protests on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, demanding the region receive its rightful share of its wealth and calling for improvements to the province's deteriorating conditions.
According to a "Barran Press" correspondent in Hadhramaut, dozens of citizens in Mukalla, the governorate's capital, organized a demonstration demanding "improved services, living conditions, and the recognition of Hadhramaut's right to its wealth."
The protest, held in front of the Hadhramaut governorate building, was described by participants as a "show of support and solidarity for all efforts aimed at rectifying the province's collapsing situation."
In a statement released by the protesters, seen by "Barran Press," they called on the Presidential Council and the government to "positively and swiftly address Hadhramaut's issues, strengthen its position, and recognize its role."
The statement highlighted similar protests in the cities of Seiyun, Ash Sharah, Tarim, Ghayel Bawazir, and Al Qatn, urging the "inclusion of the Hadhramaut Comprehensive Conference as a key party and active partner in any future political settlements."
The statement emphasized the need to "end the suffering of Hadhramaut's people in terms of basic services and the hardships they face," demanding an end to repressive and arbitrary practices against Hadhrami personnel, including their dismissal from their positions under false pretenses.
The protesters urged all political forces, unions, mass federations, and community figures to pressure the central and local authorities, as responsible entities, to "address the imbalances wherever they exist and implement presidential directives, including those related to electricity, ensuring Hadhramaut is not overlooked."
The protests coincide with the presence of Yemeni Presidential Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi in the governorate, accompanied by council members Abdullah al-Alimi and Othman Majli.
Since his arrival on Saturday, July 27, al-Alimi has held several meetings with local and security authorities, as well as a meeting with Hadhrami scholars and preachers. These meetings focused on the province's service, living, and development conditions, discussing ways to overcome existing challenges.
This is al-Alimi's second visit to Hadhramaut since assuming the presidency of the Presidential Council in April 2022. His previous visit took place on June 25, 2023.
Hadhramaut, an oil-rich province, has faced intertwined financial and developmental challenges since the terrorist attacks by the Houthi militias, supported by the Iranian regime, on oil facilities, export ports, cargo ships, international shipping routes, and maritime navigation lines.
Upon his arrival on Saturday, the Presidential Council Chairman affirmed the "Council and government's understanding of the financial situation in Hadhramaut (southeastern Yemen), and the participation of the local authority in the province's successes and failures, not escaping from them."
