A child was killed and an African migrant injured in separate landmine explosions in Al-Bayda governorate, central Yemen, the Yemeni Landmine Observatory reported on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. This brings the total number of casualties from landmines in the past week to 14 killed and injured.
The observatory stated in a brief statement on X, monitored by "Barran Press", that 14-year-old Abdulhadi Mohammed was killed by a landmine planted by the Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, in the Al-Habj area of Zaher district in Al-Bayda.
The observatory added that the incident occurred days after another landmine explosion injured an African migrant in the Al-Qan'dh area of the same governorate. The landmine resulted in the amputation of the migrant's leg.
Last Sunday, July 28, the Yemeni Landmine Observatory reported the death of a child and injuries to 11 civilians, including children and women, in landmine explosions caused by the Houthi group in four Yemeni governorates within the past 24 hours.
According to a statement released by the observatory on X, a man, his wife, and their child sustained various injuries, including the amputation of the woman's limb, due to a Houthi-planted landmine in the Beit Maghari area of Hays district in Hodeidah governorate, western Yemen.
In Sana'a governorate, the observatory confirmed the death of a child and injuries to two civilians in a landmine explosion in Nihm district. Meanwhile, a child and a woman were injured by a Houthi-planted landmine in the Al-Ja'adah area of Midi in Hajjah governorate, northwest Yemen.
The observatory also reported injuries to at least three travelers due to a Houthi-planted landmine explosion on the desert road in Khabb wa ash-Sha'f district in Jawf governorate, northeast Yemen. The observatory noted that this alternative desert road is heavily contaminated with landmines planted by the Houthis, leading to the deaths of dozens of travelers.
According to UN reports, the Houthi group has planted approximately two million landmines in various areas under its control, resulting in the deaths and injuries of over 20,000 civilians, mostly women and children.
While human rights reports accuse the Houthis of transforming Yemen into the largest landmine field ever, with the planting of over two million landmines, human rights organizations repeatedly call on the Houthi group to provide maps of the landmines they planted to organizations working in the field of demining.
