Israeli Channel 12 reported on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, that the missile that targeted Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh was launched from within Iran. This contradicts Iran's claim that Haniyeh's assassination was carried out from outside the country.

Earlier, the Israeli government's media office deleted a photo of Haniyeh with the caption "He's gone," just minutes after posting it.

The Israeli government media office subsequently admitted responsibility for Haniyeh's assassination on Wednesday. The photo was initially posted on their Facebook page with the caption "He's gone," indicating that the operation was carried out through an airstrike in Tehran.

Hamas announced on Wednesday that Haniyeh was assassinated along with one of his bodyguards in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran. The group described the strike as a "dangerous escalation" that would not achieve its goals.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the assassination, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA. Iran's Revolutionary Guard confirmed the assassination and announced an investigation into the incident.
