President of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, concluded his visit to Hadhramaut Governorate (eastern Yemen) on Sunday, August 4, 2024, announcing the construction of two 100-megawatt power plants.

Al-Alimi, who has been visiting the governorate since late July accompanied by Council members Abdullah Al-Alimi and Sheikh Othman Majli, made the announcement during a speech at the Police College in Mukalla.

The project, which will be funded jointly by the government and local authorities, will include the construction of one power plant in Coastal Hadhramaut and another in Wadi Hadhramaut, each with a capacity of 50 megawatts.

Al-Alimi praised the "achievements made for the people of Hadhramaut despite the difficult financial circumstances exacerbated by the terrorist attacks of the Houthi militias, supported by the Iranian regime, on oil facilities, cargo ships, and international shipping routes."

He called on "the people of Hadhramaut, its political, civil, and societal components, to strengthen these achievements with more cohesion and unity for the good, development, and stability of the governorate, considering it an engine of development and the restoration of state institutions."

The Presidential Council chief affirmed the council's and government's "understanding of the legitimate demands of the people of Hadhramaut and their commitment to adopting and implementing them in partnership with all state institutions."

In this context, he announced the "Presidential Council's intention to form a committee from various relevant bodies to visit Hadhramaut Governorate, assess its service and development priorities, and work towards fulfilling the aspirations of its people in all fields."

On Saturday, July 27, Al-Alimi, along with Council members Abdullah Al-Alimi and Othman Majli, arrived in Hadhramaut, a major oil-producing governorate in southeastern Yemen, marking his second visit since the Presidential Leadership Council assumed power in April 2022.

Al-Alimi's visit comes at a time when the governorate faces intertwined financial and developmental challenges since the Houthi attacks on oil facilities, export ports, cargo ships, and international shipping routes.

Coinciding with the visit, the governorate witnessed several events and protests by political and social groups demanding that the internationally recognized Yemeni government address the rights of the people of Hadhramaut in terms of services and their share of the revenues from their oil wealth.

On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, a meeting of the Hadhramaut Tribes Alliance announced a 48-hour ultimatum to the Yemeni government to fulfill its demands for a "genuine and effective partnership" regarding the oil reserves in the Dhaba port and the Masila field, threatening to seize control of the Dhaba port.
