SANAA, YEMEN - The recent floods that have ravaged several Yemeni governorates have claimed the lives of 57 people, with 45 confirmed dead and 12 still missing, the Yemeni Red Crescent Society announced on Thursday, August 8th.
The society, in a statement posted on X, attributed the casualties to heavy rains and severe flooding that struck the governorates of Hodeidah, Hajjah, Taizz (west), Amran, Sa'ada, Dhamar, and Sana'a (north) in recent days.
The floods have affected a total of 93,440 individuals, forcing 3,640 people to flee their homes, according to the Red Crescent. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) also issued a statement confirming the displacement of thousands of families due to the floods.
Hodeidah, Hajjah, Taizz, and Amran experienced torrential rainfall in the past few days, resulting in significant human and material losses. Yemen's already weakened infrastructure has exacerbated the damage caused by the floods, leading to amplified destruction and casualties.
