A campaign to address the damage caused by recent heavy rains and floods and assist affected residents in liberated areas of Hodeidah Governorate (western Yemen) was launched on Saturday, August 10th, 2024.
According to the official Yemeni news agency Saba, the campaign, initiated under the patronage of Presidential Leadership Council member Tareq Saleh and supported by the Emirati Red Crescent, aims to "protect targeted communities from torrential rains."
The campaign also aims to "distribute cash assistance to those affected in the Hijjah Abid area, based on a field assessment conducted by a specialized team from the humanitarian cell in coordination with the local authorities," the agency reported.
Saba stated that the campaign has "begun by building earthen barriers to protect communities and opening flood channels in the villages of Bait al-Hadish, Bait al-Himi, and Bait Aqeish in the Hiss countryside, as well as the main channel in the Al-Khokha district."
Last Wednesday, the Tihama plain (western Yemen), which includes Hodeidah Governorate and parts of other governorates, experienced heavy rains and floods, resulting in significant casualties and property damage. This was compounded by inadequate relief efforts, insufficient assistance to the affected population, and a lack of comprehensive statistics to assess the scale of the disaster.
The recognized Yemeni government had previously issued calls for aid to the coastal Tihama region (western Yemen), which suffered heavy casualties and property damage due to the floods last Wednesday after more than 10 hours of torrential rain.
Estimates indicate that at least 45 people have died, over 100 others are missing, and more than 500 homes have been destroyed. Thousands of families have been displaced after their homes were damaged or out of fear of further rainfall.
On Friday, the United Nations announced that it had requested urgent support from donors to aid those affected by the floods in the Yemeni governorates of Taiz, Hodeidah, and Hajjah.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen stated in a press release published on the X platform, which Barran Press reviewed, that "in recent days, heavy rains and floods have caused dozens of casualties and severe damage to homes, property, and infrastructure in Yemen."
