The United States reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen and the Yemeni people in overcoming the country's ongoing crises on Monday, August 12, 2024.
This statement came during a meeting between the US Ambassador to Yemen, Steven Fagin, and a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, Othman Majli, according to the official Yemeni News Agency Saba.
The US Ambassador reiterated "his country's commitment to supporting Yemen and standing with the Yemeni people," expressing willingness for immediate intervention in this regard, based on assessments by international organizations and humanitarian partners.
During the meeting, Majli spoke about the "daily suffering of citizens in the governorates under the control of the Houthi group, internationally designated as a terrorist organization," citing recent events such as the group's "unjust" military campaign against the people of the "Sarar" area in the Wald Rabi'a Qifah district of al-Bayda governorate.
He stated that "the Houthi project will only be defeated by the Yemenis who are threatened by them and who know their true capabilities," arguing that targeting pomegranate farmers in Saada governorate, attempting to impose taxes on them, and forcing them to sell their agricultural products at low prices through Houthi supervisors has caused farmers to rebel against them in public markets, while others have chosen not to harvest their crops, leaving them to die in the fields.
Majli pointed out that the Houthis represent a "serious threat to Yemen, the region, and the interests of the international community through their terrorist activities in the Red Sea as a global waterway, and their continued digging of trenches in the mountains and stockpiling of weapons."
He clarified that these preparations are not for peace, while "our partners are seeking peace, and we in the legitimacy support their efforts and welcome them," noting that "the international community has become convinced that everything the Houthis do is blackmail, and the ambitions of the Houthis and Iran have been exposed after the American strikes that killed five members of the militia who were being trained by the Iranians and carrying out military missions there."
Majli also addressed the difficult humanitarian situation, the significant human and material losses suffered by residents in Taiz, Hodeidah, Hajjah, and Marib due to climate change, heavy rains, and flash floods that have affected large parts of the country, calling for effective interventions from international organizations and friendly countries to address urgent needs and assist affected families.
