The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024, that over 34,000 Yemeni families have been affected by floods that swept through 19 governorates across the country.

The UNHCR's Yemen office stated in a press release that "heavy rains and floods that recently hit the country have caused significant damage to over 12,000 homes and shelters."

The statement added that "over 34,000 families have been affected by the floods in 19 governorates," according to Anadolu Agency.

The release further noted that "the floods have resulted in the inundation of agricultural lands, livestock deaths, and disruption of livelihoods," without providing further details.

Since the beginning of August, heavy rainfall has intensified in several Yemeni governorates, leading to floods and landslides that have claimed 57 lives and caused substantial material damage, according to UN and government reports.

Yemen's already fragile infrastructure has exacerbated the impact of the floods, adding to the suffering of a population already grappling with the devastating consequences of a civil war that has raged for nearly a decade. The war has crippled essential services, leaving the population vulnerable to natural disasters and further compounding their hardship.
