The United States condemned the "terrorist attack" that targeted a military base in Modaya district, Abyan Governorate (southern Yemen), on Friday, August 16, 2024.
The condemnation came in a brief statement released by the US Embassy in Yemen on its X account, as observed by "Barran Press."
The statement said, "The US Embassy in Yemen strongly condemns the horrific terrorist attack in Abyan Governorate, which resulted in dozens of casualties."
On Friday morning, over 30 soldiers from the Support and Reinforcement Brigade, affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC), were killed and injured when a car bomb exploded near a military base east of Modaya district, according to STC-affiliated media outlets.
Later, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed responsibility for the attack. The US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist media, reported that AQAP stated that a "fighter detonated a car bomb at the military site."
The internationally recognized Yemeni government, in a statement published by the official Saba news agency, affirmed that this "cowardly terrorist attack" would not diminish "the determination of Yemenis in their battle to complete the restoration of the state and defeat criminal organizations, primarily Al-Qaeda and ISIS, which are colluding with the Houthi terrorist militia supported by the Iranian regime."
Abyan Governorate has witnessed similar attacks from time to time, resulting in the deaths and injuries of dozens of soldiers. These crimes are typically attributed to "Al-Qaeda," which often issues statements claiming responsibility for most of these operations.
