UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg has called for a constructive dialogue to achieve peace and de-escalate the conflict in the war-torn country.

In a statement released on Telegram, monitored by "Barran Press", Grundberg, who concluded a visit to Muscat on Wednesday, expressed his appreciation for Oman's role in supporting UN efforts to bring peace and stability to Yemen. He met with senior Omani officials, as well as Houthi spokesperson and chief negotiator Mohammed Abdul Salam, during his visit.

Grundberg stressed the urgent need to de-escalate the conflict across Yemen, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the interests of the Yemeni people. He called for a constructive dialogue and reiterated the UN Secretary-General's call for the immediate and unconditional release of 17 UN staff currently detained by the Houthis.

In December 2023, the UN announced that Yemeni parties had reached agreements to implement a nationwide ceasefire, improve living conditions, and engage in preparations for a comprehensive political process under UN auspices. However, these efforts have been stalled since November 2023 due to attacks by the Houthis, designated as a terrorist group by several countries, on commercial ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden.

The UN Envoy's call for dialogue and de-escalation comes as Yemen continues to grapple with a devastating humanitarian crisis, with millions facing food insecurity and displacement.
