The internationally recognized Yemeni government officially launched the pilot phase of the Starlink (satellite internet) service in liberated areas on Sunday, September 1, 2024. The pilot program aims to evaluate the service by a joint technical team from the General Corporation of Telecommunications and Starlink to ensure the quality of high-speed satellite internet.
Wael Tarmoom, the Executive Director of the General Corporation of Telecommunications and Wireless Communications in the temporary capital Aden, stated that the launch follows the completion of all legal procedures, technical requirements, and commercial contractual arrangements between the Corporation and Starlink.
"The service licensing agreement was signed in early January," Tarmoom said, adding that the Corporation has become the authorized agent for Starlink in Yemen, according to the official Yemeni news agency Saba.
He explained that the next phase will focus on correcting the status of devices currently operating on the international system. The service is now available to everyone, and the team will assess the improvement in reception quality.
Tarmoom highlighted that Yemen will be officially covered by Starlink starting in October. He noted that the country's geographical location will appear in the coverage map on Starlink's website, marked in light color, indicating the availability of the service, whereas previously it was shown in dark color.
He further clarified that various services will be offered through authorized sales points affiliated with the Corporation, which are already operational in most liberated provinces. The number of these points will be increased if necessary. Devices with the latest specifications will be sold at affordable prices.
Tarmoom explained that there will be four main packages with different speeds, allowing users to choose the best option for their needs at reasonable prices. He emphasized that the Corporation will take legal action against shops and individuals promoting the service on social media platforms. He warned violators that their devices will be confiscated and urged citizens to avoid violations to prevent fines.
On August 6, 2024, the recognized Yemeni government approved the launch of the Starlink satellite internet service in Yemen after completing all relevant procedures.
