The Saudi Arabian National Shipping Company (Bahri) confirmed on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, that its tanker "Amjad" was sailing near another vessel that was attacked in the Red Sea on Monday, but was not targeted and sustained no damage or injuries.

In a statement, Bahri stated, "We unequivocally confirm that Amjad was not targeted and did not suffer any injuries or damage. The vessel remains fully operational and is proceeding to its planned destination without interruption."

The company added, "Bahri immediately informed all relevant authorities and remains in constant communication with our crew. We are closely monitoring the situation."

Reuters reported on Monday that a Saudi oil tanker and another Panama-flagged oil tanker were attacked in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen.

Sources told Reuters that the tankers, "Amjad" (Saudi-flagged) and "Blue Lagoon 1" (Panama-flagged), were sailing in close proximity when they were hit. However, both tankers were able to continue their journeys without significant damage or injuries to their crews.

Since November 2023, the Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization by the US, has continued to launch missile and drone attacks against commercial ships in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. These attacks have significantly increased maritime insurance costs and forced many international shipping companies to opt for the much longer route around the southern tip of Africa.

To deter the Houthis and safeguard maritime navigation, the US formed a multinational coalition in December 2023. US forces have been conducting periodic strikes against Houthi military targets.
