King Abdullah II of Jordan tasked Jaafar Hassan with forming a new government on Sunday, September 15, 2024, replacing the government of Bisher Al-Khasawneh, whose resignation was accepted, according to the Royal Court of Jordan.
Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh submitted the resignation of his government to King Abdullah II, paving the way for the formation of a new government. This comes less than a week after parliamentary elections, according to Jordanian state television.
"Al-Mamlaka" channel reported that "the government of Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh submitted its resignation on Sunday, after completing the 20th Parliament elections."
It is customary for the government to resign after each parliamentary election, held every four years. The King then appoints a new Prime Minister to form a new government.
Islamists emerged as the leading force in the parliamentary elections held on Tuesday, securing 31 out of 138 seats, an unprecedented result for the Islamic movement in over three decades. This outcome is attributed to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Among the winners are 27 women.
According to Agence France-Presse, the elections were held under a new law passed in January 2022, which allocated 41 seats to parties in an attempt to boost political activity.
The government of diplomat and lawyer Bisher Al-Khasawneh (55 years old) was formed on October 12, 2020.
