On September 23, 2024, local sources reported that the Iran-aligned Houthi group, which is internationally classified as a terrorist organization, has kidnapped a social figure in Amran province and a lawyer in Hodeidah as part of a crackdown on celebrations marking the September 26 Revolution.
According to journalist Fares Alhemyari, a correspondent for the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the Houthis detained Faisal Saleh Sinan in the Jabal Eyal Yazid district of Amran. Sinan is a prominent social figure and serves as an educational supervisor in the Ministry of Education.
In a post monitored by "Barran Press," Al-Alhemyari attributed Sinan's arrest to the Houthis' fears surrounding calls for celebrating the anniversary of the Yemeni revolution on September 26.
In Hodeidah, Al-Alhemyari reported that lawyer Mansour Al-Badji, a member of the Yemeni Bar Association's administrative board, was also arrested by the Houthis. His detention coincided with a broader campaign targeting several lawyers who had discussed plans for celebrating the September 26 Revolution in a WhatsApp group comprising dozens of Yemeni attorneys.
Since the beginning of September, the Houthis have intensified their abduction campaign, targeting dozens of individuals advocating for the celebration of the September 26 Revolution. This crackdown has included tribal and political leaders, journalists, activists, university and school students, and even some vendors in public markets across various provinces under Houthi control, such as Sana'a, Ibb, Dhamar, Amran, and Hodeidah.
Next Thursday, Yemenis will commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the republic's establishment and the fall of the imamate system on September 26, 1962. As September began, Yemenis quickly decorated their social media profiles with slogans and chants related to the September 26 Revolution.
Since taking control, the Houthis have worked to erase the significance of the September 26 celebrations from educational curricula and media, replacing it with commemorations of their takeover of the capital, Sana'a, on September 21, 2014.
The September 26 Revolution in northern Yemen in 1962 aimed to overthrow the Zaidi imamate, leading to the establishment of the Yemen Arab Republic. This was followed by the October 14 Revolution against British colonial rule in southern Yemen, which culminated in independence on November 30, 1967.
