Beirut, September 28, 2024 — Hezbollah confirmed on Saturday that its secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on southern Beirut, marking a significant blow to the group, which has suffered a series of targeted attacks against its leadership.

The assassination of Nasrallah represents a major setback for Hezbollah, already reeling from escalating Israeli assaults. Below is a list of other key Hezbollah leaders who have been assassinated, with Israel often accused of orchestrating these killings.

1. Hassan Nasrallah

Hezbollah announced the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, following confirmation from the Israeli military regarding his killing in an airstrike on Beirut. His assassination is a substantial loss for Hezbollah and a significant blow to Iran, given his pivotal role in the regional "Axis of Resistance" supported by Tehran.

2. Ibrahim Qabisi

On September 24, a strike on southern Beirut resulted in the death of Ibrahim Qabisi, a prominent commander in Hezbollah's missile unit. Sources indicated that Qabisi was a key figure within the organization.

3. Ibrahim Aqil

Ibrahim Aqil, a high-ranking operations commander, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on September 20. Aqil, who was known to use aliases such as Tahseen and Abd al-Qadir, was a member of the Jihad Council, Hezbollah’s highest military authority. The U.S. has accused him of involvement in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut, which killed 63 people, as well as the subsequent bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks that resulted in 241 American casualties.

4. Ahmad Wahbi

Ahmad Wahbi was killed in the same strike that took Ibrahim Aqil on September 20. Wahbi, a senior commander, oversaw military operations for the elite Radwan Unit during the Gaza conflict until early 2024.

5. Fouad Shukr

Fouad Shukr, another high-ranking military leader, was killed on July 30 in an Israeli strike on southern Beirut. The Israeli military described Shukr as Nasrallah's right-hand man and highlighted his prominent role in Hezbollah's operations since the group's inception by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard over 40 years ago. The U.S. imposed sanctions on Shukr in 2015, accusing him of playing a central role in the 1983 Marine barracks bombing.

6. Mohammad Nasser

Mohammad Nasser died in an Israeli airstrike on July 3. Israel claimed responsibility, stating he led a unit responsible for attacks against them from southwest Lebanon. Nasser was a significant commander involved in Hezbollah's operations along the border.

7. Talib Abdullah

Talib Abdullah, a senior field commander, was killed on June 12 in an Israeli airstrike targeting a command and control center in southern Lebanon. Security sources indicated he was a leader in the central region of the southern border and held a rank similar to Mohammad Nasser. His assassination prompted Hezbollah to launch a barrage of rockets into Israel.

These assassinations reflect the ongoing and intense conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, underscoring the volatile nature of the region.
