A Lebanese security source reported that Israel received intelligence from an Iranian source on Friday afternoon regarding the anticipated arrival of Hezbollah's Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, at the party's headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

According to the French newspaper Le Parisien on Saturday, September 28, 2024, the source indicated that Israeli leadership awaited Nasrallah's arrival at the command center following the funeral of Mohammed Hussein Sarour, the former head of Hezbollah's drone unit in southern Lebanon.

On Saturday, Hezbollah confirmed the death of Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike in the southern Beirut suburb, a stronghold of the group. Earlier that day, the Israeli military announced that Nasrallah and several other leaders were killed in airstrikes targeting the area.

Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson Avichai Adraee stated that the military successfully eliminated Nasrallah along with Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah's southern front, among other leaders. He noted that the airstrikes were conducted based on precise intelligence targeting Hezbollah's central command, located underground beneath a residential building in the southern suburb.

The airstrike occurred while Hezbollah's leadership was present in the command center. Since September 23, the Israeli military has been conducting what it describes as the "most intense and extensive" assault on Lebanon since hostilities with Hezbollah began approximately a year ago. As of Saturday evening, the attacks have resulted in 816 fatalities, including women and children, and 2,507 injuries, according to data from Lebanese authorities, raising concerns about the potential escalation into a regional conflict.

Since October 8, 2023, Lebanese and Palestinian factions, primarily Hezbollah, have engaged in daily exchanges of fire with the Israeli army across the Blue Line, demanding an end to Israel's war against Gaza, which has been supported by the United States since October 7.
