On Sunday, September 29, 2024, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a Sudanese military aircraft targeted the residence of the UAE ambassador in Khartoum, resulting in significant damage to the building. The ministry condemned the attack, labeling it a "cowardly act" and called on the Sudanese army to take full responsibility.
In a statement published on its official website, the ministry strongly denounced what it described as "brazen aggression." It indicated that a formal protest would be submitted to the Arab League, the African Union, and the United Nations regarding the assault by the Sudanese armed forces.
The UAE emphasized that this incident represents a blatant violation of the fundamental principle of diplomatic immunity and the sanctity of diplomatic premises. The ministry highlighted the importance of protecting diplomatic buildings and the offices of embassy staff in accordance with international norms and agreements governing diplomatic relations.
The UAE expressed its profound outrage at what it termed "criminal acts" and reiterated its rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism that undermine security and stability, which contravene international law.
In recent days, the Sudanese army has launched a large-scale military operation aimed at regaining control of Khartoum from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Reports indicate that the army has conducted artillery and air strikes to reclaim parts of the capital.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in an internal conflict between the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the RSF, led by Mohamed Dagalo. The fighting has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and has displaced nearly 13 million Sudanese, according to UN estimates.
