Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, commented on Hezbollah's recent call for a ceasefire, stating that the armed group appears to be in a defensive position and is "taking heavy hits."

Earlier in the day, Hezbollah's Deputy Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, addressed the nation via television, asserting that the group's capabilities remain intact and that its fighters are successfully repelling Israeli ground incursions despite the "painful strikes" they have faced in recent weeks.

Qassem expressed Hezbollah's support for efforts led by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, to negotiate a ceasefire, although he did not provide further details on Hezbollah's conditions.

In a routine press briefing, Miller remarked, "The world has been calling for this ceasefire for a year, while Hezbollah has refused to agree. Now that Hezbollah finds itself on the defensive and under significant pressure, it suddenly changes its stance and seeks a ceasefire."

He added, "We still ultimately want a diplomatic solution to this conflict."

When asked whether the U.S. was engaging with Berri regarding efforts to select a new president in Lebanon, Miller stated that American officials are in discussions with various parties within Lebanon, primarily through intermediaries.

He noted, "These talks are ongoing... I don’t think it’s useful to disclose their content."

The ongoing Israeli attacks on Hezbollah have prompted some Lebanese politicians to make another attempt to fill the presidential void that has persisted for two years, in an effort to revitalize a state that is currently paralyzed across various sectors amid escalating conflict.
