On Saturday, October 26, 2024, the Industry and Trade Office in Taiz province destroyed more than 40 tons of expired medications that had been seized from various traders and pharmaceutical companies in the area.

During the destruction process, Ibtihal Al-Mashhari, director of the Cleaning and Improvement Fund in Taiz, expressed concern that her organization was not informed about the disposal of such a large quantity of expired medicines. She stated that the waste management team notified her about the significant amount of medications, prompting her to attend the disposal to ensure it was conducted "properly."

Al-Mashhari emphasized the importance of adhering to environmentally safe disposal methods, which included crushing the medications with machinery, incinerating them, and burying the remains, all while representatives from the Industry Office, the Drug Authority, and the manufacturing company were present.

She highlighted the necessity for the Cleaning Fund to be included in the disposal committee, given its responsibility for the waste disposal site where such materials are destroyed, whether they are pharmaceuticals or other waste.

Al-Mashhari also called on the Taiz Health Office to establish a large incinerator at the waste site to properly dispose of expired medications and medical waste, in order to prevent catastrophic environmental risks to the city of Taiz.
