On November 13, 2024, Marib Governorate’s Deputy, Abdu Rabbu Miftah, met with Frederic Ba Tajani, the coordinator for the Water and Environmental Sanitation Cluster in Yemen, to discuss expanding interventions and addressing significant challenges in the region’s water and sanitation sectors.
The meeting, reported by the official Saba News Agency, focused on the humanitarian situation in Marib, which has accommodated over 62% of Yemen's internally displaced persons (IDPs). The discussions highlighted the growing and urgent needs within the water and sanitation sector, particularly in a region that hosts more than 204 camps for IDPs and faces water scarcity and salinity issues.
Miftah emphasized the importance of considering the large population in Marib, which exceeds three million people, mostly IDPs, when the cluster allocates humanitarian projects for the upcoming year.
Frederic Ba Tajani noted that his visit aims to closely assess the needs in water and environmental sanitation, along with ongoing projects implemented by UNICEF, which leads the cluster. He reaffirmed that Marib is a key focus for UNICEF and the Water and Environmental Sanitation Cluster in their intervention plans for the next year.
