On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Abdul Karim Nasser, the chargé d'affaires of the Somali embassy in Yemen, met with local authorities in Marib Governorate, northeastern Yemen, to discuss the situation of the Somali community in the region.

During his visit, Nasser met with Deputy Governor Ali al-Fatimi, who highlighted the local government's efforts to provide essential humanitarian services to the Somali community and to irregular migrants from various countries in the Horn of Africa.

According to the official Saba news agency, al-Fatimi detailed the challenges facing local authorities in securing the necessary resources for approximately 2.3 million displaced persons and around 37,000 migrants.

The meeting underscored the need for the United Nations and its various agencies, along with international organizations, to fulfill their humanitarian and ethical obligations towards African migrants in Marib. It called for the provision of essential services and adequate care for these individuals in coordination with local authorities.

Nasser explained that his visit aims to monitor the voluntary return program for Somali nationals to their homeland in coordination with relevant international organizations.

He praised the humanitarian efforts of the local authorities in Marib, recognizing their dedication to serving African migrants in general and the Somali community in particular, despite the significant burdens they face from hosting millions of Yemeni displaced persons and tens of thousands of Africans amidst the challenging conditions in Yemen.
