Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, Chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), has arrived in the interim capital of Aden, accompanied by the newly appointed Prime Minister Salem bin Breik. This marks Bin Breik's first return to Yemen since his appointment on May 3.
The official Yemeni News Agency (Saba) reported the high-profile arrival, noting that Al-Alimi's return to Aden followed a "fruitful official visit" to the Russian Federation. During his visit, Al-Alimi held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and senior officials in the State Duma and the Russian government.
A source from the Republican Presidency office stated that the PLC Chairman, alongside council members, will continue efforts to bolster the government's role in confronting the economic and humanitarian crises. These crises, the source emphasized, were caused by the Houthi group, which is internationally designated as a terrorist organization.
The source further clarified that Al-Alimi is scheduled to hold meetings with the prime minister, local authority leaders, and relevant entities. Discussions will focus on plans and policies aimed at enhancing comprehensive reforms, containing economic and service deterioration, and supporting the "battle for liberation and state recovery."
Prime Minister Salem bin Breik's return to Aden is particularly significant, as it's his first time on Yemeni soil since being appointed to the top government post. He succeeded Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, whose relationship with Al-Alimi had reportedly become strained. Bin Mubarak was subsequently appointed as an advisor to the PLC Chairman.
Earlier, a government source within the internationally recognized Yemeni government had indicated that the delay in Bin Breik's return to Aden was due to his efforts to mobilize financial and economic support directly addressing the needs of the Yemeni people.
A senior official in the Council of Ministers, in a statement conveyed by Saba, explained that Bin Breik's stay in Riyadh was part of intensive and direct follow-up to secure urgent support. This support is crucial for tackling economic and service issues, most notably salary payments, resolving the electricity crisis, and stabilizing the currency.
The source concluded that the Prime Minister's return would occur immediately upon the completion of ongoing arrangements, through which he aims to achieve tangible results on the ground, rather than merely a symbolic presence. Bin Breik has been in continuous contact and meetings with Yemen's partners, particularly the Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy, to rally urgent financial and economic aid and devise sustainable solutions for Yemen's protracted crisis.
