On December 8, 2024, Saudi Arabia expressed its relief regarding the "positive steps" taken to ensure the safety of the Syrian people, emphasizing the importance of preserving state institutions and resources.

In a statement released by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reported by the Saudi Press Agency (WAS), the kingdom reaffirmed its support for the Syrian people and their choices during this pivotal moment in Syria's history.

Saudi Arabia called for collective efforts to maintain Syria's unity and the solidarity of its people, warning against the risks of chaos and division. The statement highlighted the kingdom's commitment to supporting measures that would achieve Syria's security and stability while respecting its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia urged the international community to stand by the Syrian people and collaborate on initiatives that would benefit Syria and fulfill the aspirations of its citizens, while avoiding interference in its internal affairs.

The kingdom underscored the necessity of assisting Syria during this critical phase to help alleviate the suffering of its people, which has persisted for years and resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and the displacement of millions, exacerbated by foreign militias imposing external agendas on the country.

Saudi Arabia emphasized the importance of providing a dignified life for Syrians and enabling them to participate in shaping a prosperous future characterized by security, stability, and prosperity. The statement reinforced the need for Syria to restore its rightful place in the Arab and Islamic worlds.

Earlier that day, Syrian opposition factions entered Damascus, taking control of the capital as government forces withdrew from public institutions and streets, marking the end of 61 years of Ba'ath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family governance.

This shift followed battles that began on November 27, 2024, between Syrian government forces and opposition factions in the western countryside of Aleppo, where opposition forces successfully gained control over Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Daraa, Sweida, and finally, Damascus.
