On December 11, 2024, the Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms reported that the Houthi group, classified as a terrorist organization internationally, has arrested 17 activists and youth from various neighborhoods in Sana'a following their celebrations of the Syrian people's victory over President Bashar al-Assad.
In a statement reviewed by Barran Press, the network condemned the campaign of repression and abduction carried out by the Houthis against those celebrating the fall of Assad.
According to the network's field monitoring team, the crackdown affected areas such as Al-Safiyah and Al-Sab'een in the capital, with detainees taken to secret prisons controlled by the militia, representing a blatant violation of international laws and treaties.
The network emphasized that such actions reflect the Houthis' anxiety regarding the repercussions of the situation in Syria on their control in Sana'a, fearing a similar popular uprising that could threaten their existence.
Additionally, the network noted an increase in the presence of Houthi security and military personnel on the streets and neighborhoods of the capital in recent days.
"This dangerous escalation is part of a continued campaign to silence dissent and suppress freedoms, as the militia broadens its crackdown on politicians, journalists, human rights defenders, and activists," the statement read.
The network called on the international community, the United Nations, its special envoy to Yemen, and human rights organizations to clearly condemn these crimes as a crucial step toward holding the perpetrators accountable.
They stressed that the silence of the international community in the face of these atrocities encourages the Houthis to commit further violations against innocent civilians, necessitating a firm response to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.
On December 8, 2024, Syrian opposition forces announced their control over Damascus and the fall of President Assad, marking the beginning of a "new era" for Syria after a wide-ranging military operation that ended over 50 years of Assad family rule.
