On December 15, 2024, updates from numerical weather models and satellite images indicated that a cold polar air mass from the north has begun to affect Yemen's desert regions.
Weather expert Khalid Al-Shatah reported on Facebook that this polar air mass, accompanied by cold northern winds and a dust wave of moderate intensity, is expected to impact several desert areas in the coming hours.
Al-Shatah forecasts that the peak of the severe cold wave will begin on Monday evening and continue through Saturday. During this period, minimum temperatures are expected to drop to record lows below freezing, particularly in the following regions: Al-Mahrah, Hadhramaut, Shabwa, Marib, and Al-Jawf, as well as in some western highlands, with a high likelihood of frost formation in certain desert and mountainous areas.
Additionally, the National Center for Meteorology and Early Warning predicts that the mountainous regions will experience extremely cold conditions during the night and early morning hours in the provinces of Al-Bayda, Dhamar, Sana'a, Amran, and Saada, as well as in the highlands of Ibb, Al-Dhale, Lahij, Abyan, Shabwa, and Hadhramaut. Frost is likely to form in parts of these provinces, with chilly weather expected in other highland areas.
The center's daily report indicated that the expected minimum temperature in Dhamar will be one degree below zero, with temperatures of zero in Sana'a and Al-Bayda, and one degree in Saada.
In the desert areas, relatively clear but cold conditions are anticipated, with moderate winds occasionally reaching speeds of up to 18 knots.
The National Center for Meteorology and Early Warning has strongly advised residents in the mountainous regions, interior plateaus, and deserts to be cautious of the cold and extremely cold conditions during the night and early morning. It also urged farmers to take necessary precautions to protect their crops from frost, as well as advising livestock herders, beekeepers, and poultry farmers to safeguard their animals from the harsh cold.
