On December 15, 2024, Sultan Al-Arada, a member of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, called on the United Kingdom to enhance its strategic role in the Yemeni crisis. He emphasized the need for the UK to rally international support and unify efforts against Iran's disruptive actions in Yemen.
Al-Arada made these remarks during a meeting in Riyadh with the UK Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif, where they discussed the latest developments in Yemen and efforts to achieve peace, as well as ways to strengthen bilateral relations across various sectors, according to the Yemeni news agency Saba.
In the meeting, Al-Arada urged the UK to intensify pressure on the Houthi group, which is designated as a terrorist organization, to encourage a positive response to the peace process and fulfill its obligations to ensure regional security and stability.
He stressed that any regional or international efforts aimed at achieving peace in Yemen must adhere to the three agreed-upon political references: the Gulf Initiative and its Implementation Mechanism, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and UN Resolution 2216.
Al-Arada reviewed the current political, economic, and humanitarian situation in Yemen and called for increased British support for the government to address ongoing challenges, particularly in economic and humanitarian sectors, to improve the living conditions of Yemenis.
He also highlighted Iran's "destructive role" in Yemen, noting its continued support for the Houthis through arms and military technology, which undermines security and stability in Yemen and the broader region.
The council member pointed out the escalation of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, including terrorist actions against commercial vessels, threatening maritime navigation and global trade routes. He warned that such hostile activities not only undermine the peace process in Yemen but also disrupt regional and international security.
In response, Ambassador Abda Sharif reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting peaceful solutions in Yemen and its ongoing collaboration with all parties to facilitate the peace process and restore security and stability in the country. She expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Presidential Leadership Council in advancing peace initiatives.
