On December 23, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that Yemen is facing the largest cholera burden in the world, with 249,900 suspected cases and 861 related deaths recorded since the beginning of the year, up to December 1.
In a statement reviewed by "Barran Press," the WHO emphasized that Yemen accounts for a staggering 35% of the global cholera burden and 18% of reported cholera-related fatalities worldwide.
The organization noted a sharp increase in reported cases and deaths in November 2024, with figures rising by 37% and 27%, respectively, compared to the same month in 2023.
Yemen has been grappling with ongoing cholera outbreaks for several years, having experienced the largest cholera epidemic in modern history between 2017 and 2020.
The WHO indicated that the rise in cases this year is attributed to updated data from Yemen, which now includes more detailed information from all governorates.
