Authorities in South Korea have confirmed that at least 174 people were killed following the crash of a passenger plane carrying 181 individuals at Muan International Airport in the southwest of the country on December 29, 2024.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737-8AS operated by Jeju Air, reportedly encountered difficulties during landing. Initial reports suggest that a bird strike, coupled with adverse weather conditions, may have contributed to the tragedy. The Muan Fire Department stated that two crew members were rescued, but at least 151 passengers lost their lives.
Lee Jeong-hyun, head of the Muan Fire Department, held a press conference where he outlined the preliminary findings. “The incident was caused by a collision with birds, in addition to unfavorable weather conditions. However, a thorough investigation will determine the exact cause,” he said.
Local fire officials reported that passengers were thrown from the aircraft upon impact with an obstacle, leaving them with little chance of survival. “The plane was nearly completely destroyed, making it difficult to identify the victims' remains,” a spokesperson remarked.
In a statement, Jeju Air issued a heartfelt apology and pledged to do everything possible to assist in the aftermath of the crash. “We sincerely apologize for the distress caused by this incident and will do our utmost to respond effectively,” the airline stated.
Dramatic footage captured the moment the aircraft skidded along the runway before erupting into flames. Muan International Airport, located approximately 290 kilometers southwest of Seoul, witnessed a rapid response, with 32 fire trucks and dozens of firefighters dispatched to the scene.
The disaster occurred at 9:03 AM local time (00:03 GMT) as Flight 2216 was approaching for landing.
South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mook, has called for the mobilization of all resources to aid in the rescue efforts. “All relevant agencies must deploy every available resource to assist the passengers of the downed aircraft,” he stated.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with further details expected to emerge as authorities continue their inquiries.
