On December 31, 2024, Syrian Foreign Minister Asad Al-Shaibani announced that he received a phone call from Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Al-Shaibani noted that the conversation emphasized the importance of both countries in fostering stability and prosperity in the region, highlighting their shared history and promising future.
This call marks the first official communication between an Egyptian official and the current Syrian government, although no immediate statement was issued by Egyptian authorities regarding the conversation.
Prior to this announcement, Egypt had not publicly engaged with the interim government or the Islamic factions that ousted Bashar al-Assad's regime. Notably, the Syrian embassy in Cairo has yet to display the new national flag, which features green instead of red and three red stars rather than the previous two green stars.
Since the fall of Assad's government on December 8, Egyptian officials have focused on calls for preserving Syria's unity and underscoring the need for a political process that includes all components of Syrian society.
