On January 1, 2025, Yemen's National Center for Meteorology and Early Warning forecasted severe cold weather in the coming hours, with temperatures in Dhamar expected to drop to a chilling one degree Celsius.
In its weather report, seen by Barran Press, the center noted that mountainous regions, including Al-Bayda, Dhamar, Sana'a, Amran, and Saada, would experience extremely cold conditions during the night and early morning hours, with frost likely forming in parts of these provinces.
Additionally, cold to very cold weather is anticipated across the highlands of Hajja, Al-Mahwit, Raymah, Ibb, Al-Dhale, Taiz, Lahij, Abyan, and Shabwa, as well as in the plateaus and deserts of Al-Jawf, Marib, Hadramout, and Al-Mahra. Cumulus clouds are expected to develop in these areas during the afternoon.
The center also predicted scattered showers in parts of Raymah, Hajja, Al-Mahwit, and the Tihama plain, along with the formation of mist or fog in the highlands of Hajja, Al-Mahwit, and Raymah during the evening.
Coastal regions, particularly the Socotra Archipelago and southern coasts, may experience partly to mostly cloudy skies, with a chance of sporadic rain in the morning and moderate winds in Socotra, while other coastal areas might see light to moderate breezes.
In desert areas, clear and cold conditions are expected during the night and early morning, with moderate winds occasionally stirring dust.
The National Center warned that Yemen would be affected by a cold air mass moving in from the north, with direct impacts expected to begin on Thursday in the provinces of Al-Jawf, Marib, Shabwa, and parts of Hadramout, before expanding to cover larger areas of the country.
Citizens were cautioned to prepare for cold and very cold weather during the night and early morning, particularly the elderly, children, and those with health conditions. Farmers were advised to take precautions against the severe cold to protect their crops, and livestock and poultry owners were urged to shelter their animals in warm, safe places. The center also warned of relatively dusty conditions in desert areas and parts of the interior plateaus.
