DAMASCUS, Syria — French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barot arrived in Damascus on Friday, January 3, 2025, marking a significant diplomatic engagement as he is followed by his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock. This visit is notable as it represents the first high-level delegation from Western nations to Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

During their trip, the ministers are set to meet with Ahmad al-Shara, the effective leader of the new Syrian administration, and visit the notorious Saydnaya Prison, a site emblematic of the regime's repression.

According to the French Foreign Ministry, this visit symbolizes France and Germany's commitment to stand with the Syrian people in the aftermath of Assad's rule. The ministry stated that the in-person discussions would also focus on collective security challenges, primarily combating terrorism.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Minister Barot emphasized the collaborative approach of both countries, stating, "Together, France and Germany stand with the Syrian people in all their diversity." He added that their goal is to promote a peaceful and effective transition that serves the interests of Syrians and stabilizes the region.

Ahead of her arrival, Minister Baerbock expressed her intent to assist Syria in becoming a "functioning state that fully controls its territory." The German Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to support Syria's capacity-building efforts.

The visit to Saydnaya Prison, located near the capital, is particularly poignant, as it has long been a symbol of the oppressive tactics employed by the Assad regime. Baerbock acknowledged the complexities surrounding the situation, particularly regarding Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a coalition of opposition factions that deposed Assad in early December, stating, "We must not miss the opportunity to support the Syrian people at this critical juncture."
