Hodeidah , Yemen — On January 3, 2025, human rights sources reported that the Houthi group, classified as a terrorist organization internationally, has detained a woman in Hodeidah for allegedly communicating with her children and relatives residing in areas under the control of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
Eshraq Al-Maqtari, a member of the National Commission to Investigate Human Rights Violations, shared details on social media platform X, reviewed by Barran Press, indicating that Houthi militants stormed the home of Asmaa Mansour Raib in the village of Al-Shajirah due to her contact with family members in government-held territories.
Al-Maqtari stated that Asmaa was held by the Houthis for three days, during which she was coerced into paying a substantial sum and forced to pledge not to communicate with her family members, who hold jobs in the areas governed by the legitimate authorities.
"The violations that we hoped would not escalate against women, amid various campaigns led by feminist organizations, seem to be expanding to reach impoverished Yemeni women struggling to live with dignity," Al-Maqtari remarked.
The Yemeni rights advocate emphasized the challenges faced by peace advocates, urging the Houthi group to cease its repressive practices that infringe on personal freedoms and dignity. She noted that addressing these violations is crucial for building the trust necessary for any peace efforts.
