YEMEN — On January 4, 2025, the organization Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) announced that it has documented 75 violations against journalists in Yemen during the year 2024.

In a report reviewed by Barran Press, the organization outlined various forms of abuse, including executions, assassination attempts, kidnappings, and arrests, emphasizing the severe risks faced by journalists in a country ravaged by conflict.

The documented violations included 24 cases of arrest and abduction, accounting for 32% of the total incidents, along with 21 cases of trials and summons, making up 28%. Other reported abuses involved threats, torture, and raids on media institutions.

The report highlighted that journalists in Yemen are merely performing their duties in documenting events, yet they are met with hostility and are targeted without restraint. It called for an end to these systematic violations and accountability for those responsible.

Yemen is noted as one of the most dangerous countries for media professionals, where journalists are treated as adversaries to be silenced by conflicting parties. Over the past decade, WJWC has recorded 1,732 violations against journalists, including 52 killings, along with numerous cases of arrests, torture, and attacks on media outlets. The organization characterized this period as one of the darkest in the history of press freedom.

WJWC urged all parties in Yemen to respect press freedom and to release journalists who are held arbitrarily. It also called on human rights organizations to intensify their efforts to protect journalists and ensure accountability for violators.
