ABYAN, Yemen — Two young sisters were injured in an explosion caused by unexploded ordnance left behind by Iran-backed Houthi militants at a displacement camp in the Shuqrah district of Abyan on Friday.

According to a statement from the Shuqrah police, the injured girls, Iman Amin Zahir, 6, and Maryam Amin Zahir, 8, are displaced persons from Al-Hodieda governorate. The incident occurred while they were playing with the unexploded device, unaware of its dangers.

The police emphasized that the remnants of war left by the Houthis pose a continuous threat to civilian lives, particularly for children who do not understand the risks associated with such munitions.

Authorities are urging both local and international organizations to take immediate action to clear affected areas of war debris and to enhance community awareness regarding the dangers of handling these materials. This intervention is crucial to ensure the safety of residents and to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents
