On January 13, 2025, Lebanon's Presidency announced the appointment of Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice, as the new Prime Minister. Salam, supported by 85 out of 128 MPs, was tasked with forming the government.
President Joseph Aoun summoned Salam, who is currently abroad, to return to Lebanon and begin his duties. Outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati wished Salam success in forming a government that aligns with the principles outlined by the President.
Salam, a seasoned diplomat and legal expert, is seen as a departure from Lebanon's traditional political class, often criticized for corruption. His appointment marks the first time significant political blocs have united behind him.
Salam's name was previously floated for the premiership after the Beirut port explosion in August 2020, with hopes that his leadership would restore public and international trust in Lebanon.
Salam's nomination was primarily supported by political forces opposing Hezbollah, which abstained from voting. His supporters hope he will bring change to Lebanon's institutions and reduce Hezbollah's influence.
Under Salam's leadership, the International Court of Justice declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, a decision that drew sharp criticism from Israel.
