The Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) and the United States have agreed on the necessity of taking strict measures to ensure the avoidance of civilian casualties and to focus U.S. airstrikes on the leaders of the Iran-backed Houthi group.
This came during a phone call between PLC member Tariq Saleh and the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Steven Fagin, on Monday. The two sides discussed the latest developments in Yemen amidst the U.S.-led military campaign against the Houthis in response to their threats to international navigation in the Red Sea, according to the official Saba News Agency.
Saleh emphasized that confronting the Houthi threat to national, regional, and international security "requires a unified international stance and comprehensive support for the legitimate government to restore control of the country, end the coup, and stand with the Yemeni people to build a state based on good neighborliness and strong partnership with the international community."
The PLC member stressed that the Yemeni people have the ability to defeat the Houthi destructive project, asserting that "the shortest way to undermine the Iranian threat in Yemen lies in establishing an effective partnership strategy with the legitimate government."
Since March 15th, U.S. forces have conducted "intense" airstrikes on Houthi-controlled sites across several governorates, including Sana'a, Saada, Dhamar, Al-Bayda, Marib, and Hajjah.
