The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has accused the Iran-backed Houthi group of confiscating over 2.5 million kilograms (5.7 million pounds) of World Food Program (WFP) supplies in Saada, their northern Yemeni stronghold. According to CENTCOM, the seizure, which began on March 15, 2025, targeted food intended for Yemeni civilians.
In a statement released on March 18, 2025, CENTCOM condemned the "illegal" action, warning it would exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The CENTCOM emphasized that the seizure exemplifies the Houthis' disregard for civilian suffering and their continued obstruction of humanitarian aid.
This incident followed the UN's February 10 suspension of operations in Saada, prompted by the Houthis' detention of UN staff. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq cited the need to prioritize staff safety. The suspension occurred shortly after the WFP reported the death of its IT officer, Ahmed Baalawi, while in Houthi custody in Saada.
