The Saudi-led demining initiative Masam announced on April 1, 2025, that its teams had removed 2,727 explosive devices, including anti-tank mines, across Yemen in March. The operation covered government-controlled areas, clearing more than 225,957 square meters of land last month alone. Since its launch in 2018, Masam has decontaminated a total of 65.88 million square meters.

Masam’s efforts aim to mitigate the deadly threat posed by landmines laid by the Iran-backed Houthis. United Nations reports estimate that the Houthis have planted approximately two million mines, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties—most of them women and children.

Human rights organizations accuse the Houthis of turning Yemen into the “largest minefield in history” and have repeatedly called on them to provide demining agencies with detailed maps of the minefields to prevent further loss of life.
